Proof of ownership: protect yourself before you buy or sell livestock

A cow, a camel or a flock of goats can be a family's savings. Because livestock is valuable, it is also a target for theft. Buying an animal that turns out to be stolen can cost you the animal, the money and a great deal of trouble. Selling without clear papers can make honest buyers walk away. Proof of ownership protects everyone.

What counts as proof of ownership

The papers differ from place to place, but these are the most common and the most useful:

  • Brand marks or ear tags that match the owner's records.
  • A purchase receipt or sale agreement from when you bought the animal.
  • Breeding records for animals born on your farm.
  • Vaccination and treatment records in your name.
  • A movement permit from the veterinary office when the animal travelled.
  • Where it is the practice in your area, a letter from the local administration confirming the owner.

For sellers: make ownership easy to see

Keep your records together and up to date, and bring them when you meet a buyer. On Livestock Markets you can attach an ownership or branding record to your listing, next to the health papers, so buyers see from the start that the animal is yours to sell. Verified sellers carry a badge on their profile, which tells buyers they are dealing with a real, identified person.

For buyers: ask before you pay

  • Ask the seller for proof of ownership and compare it with the animal: tag, brand, colour, sex, age.
  • Be careful when a price is far below the market, when papers are missing, or when the seller is in a hurry to be paid before you have seen the animal.
  • Write a simple sale agreement with both names, ID numbers, the animal's description, the price and the date, and both sign it.
  • Pay only after you have seen the animal and the papers and you are satisfied.

Why trading on the platform helps

When you buy and sell through Livestock Markets, the people you deal with are registered members. Offers, accepted deals and contact details are recorded, sellers can carry the Verified badge, and any member can report a listing that does not look right. That record is a strong deterrent to people with something to hide, and it gives honest traders peace of mind.

Clear ownership means clean sales, fair prices and a market where good traders thrive. Keep your papers ready, ask for them every time, and trade with confidence.
